Look behind the scenes...

Wineworks Ohio

kicked off 2009 with our annual Holiday party with a relaxing evening of delicious food, exceptional wine and tons of laughter and fun!

With spouses in tow, our awesome sales representatives, wonderful drivers, incredible warehouse personnel braved the extreme cold and enjoyed an excellent dinner at Sarava's in Shaker Heights with dessert and "activity" at the new wine bar, Grotto.

Our "activity" was a Gingerbread House decorating contest judged by Grotto's General Manager Mike Tomaselli.

The winning team included Denise Sullivan (Cincinnati-Dayton Sales), Mike Schenks (Sandusky and Lake Erie Island Sales-Ginger Schenk's husband), Brea Weisman (Warehouse Manager Keith Weisman's wife) and Angie Stokes (Marketing & Events).

Other contenders for the title were:

"Team Red Roof" which boast the creative stylings of Robin Seib (Cleveland West Sales), Mike West (Driver), Keith Weisman (Warehouse Manager) and Curt Tharp (Columbus Sales).

"Team Pink Marshmallow" which combined the creative brainpower of Ginger Schenks (Sandusky and Lake Erie Islands Sales), Zack Stokes (Marketing & Events Angie Stokes' husband) and Tracy West (Driver Mike West's wife).

"Team Sweet-Tooth" who used the artistic vision of Heidi Tolchinsky (Cleveland East + Downtown Sales) not pictured, Mindy Tharp (Columbus Sales Curt Tharp's wife), Sean Weiss (Warehouse man extraordinaire) and Scott Robbins (Cincinnati Sales).
Generously hosted by the Wineworks Ohio's Kathy and Paul Tolchinsky.

More New Wines! Argentina!

Hello again!

So we have again expanded our international portfolio to the country of Argentina!

Why Argentina?

Well... Argentina is a sleeping giant in the world of wine.
While most of the wine production in Argentina is bulk wine, many artisan producers of top quality are bringing modern winemaking techniques to the region. The combination of modern winemaking with low yielding, old vine grapes makes for wines that offer some of the best quality/value ratios in the industry. Argentina is ready to explode onto the US wine scene. http://www.pinnacleargentina.com/Pinnacle/WhyArgentina.asp

Which wines?

BODEGA BENEGAS

This is one of the oldest wineries in Mendoza. The Benegas Lynch family has invested in a winemaking facility that is equal to their raw materials. Benegas is one of the flagship properties in the Argentine wine industry. The oldest plantings of Cabernet, Franc, and Merlot are believed to be planted on ungrafted rootstocks. Winemaking superstar Michel Rolland believes they may be among the last ungrafted Franc vines in the world. Benegas aims to compete with the finest wines from Bordeaux and the Napa valley. http://www.bodgeabenegas.com/

CARINAE

Carinae winery was named after a beautiful constellation in the Southern sky by the winemaker/proprietor--who is also an amateur astronomer. This winery is the newest endeavor of Philippe Subra and his wife Brigitte. He and Brigitte purchased a small winery in Maipu and began renovating the facility and its vineyard. They insistence on perfect hygiene in the winery, the limiting of yields (not hard with ancient vines like these), and appropriate use of French oak lead to wines of remarkable richness and texture without excess weight. http://www.carinaevino.com/

EL CIPRES/ EL TORDO

El Cipres (for ‘The Cypress’ trees found on the estate property) is the flagship brand of the Luis Segundo Correas winery, a presence in Argentina’s wine industry for 150 years. Currently run by the fourth generation of the Correas family, El Cipres continues to represent the quality and excellence in winemaking coming out of Mendoza.

El Tordo means “The Blackbird” in Spanish and is intended to suggest the dark inky color of the wine. When Bill Kniep, president of Pinnacle International, traveled to Argentina in order to select the wineries for Pinnacle’s portfolio, the producers of El Cipres offered to work with Bill and create a Malbec specifically for the US market. Bill tasted from each of the estate’s Malbec barrels and hand selected the juice for El Tordo. http://www.bodegacorreas.com.ar/

FINCA EL PERAL

The two Reina brothers of Finca El Peral harvest fruit from a 70 year old vineyard at 950M in Tupungato and a 10 year old vineyard planted in pure sand at 1100M. They now keep the best portion of their harvest for themselves to use under the El Peral label. Finca El Peral roughly means “the pear orchard”, and the Reina brothers are farmers first and foremost. There are still pear orchards on the original family property. The Reserva blend of the top lots in the winery is inevitably produced entirely from the younger vineyard. Irrigated by drip irrigation (a necessity in this desert climate), the vines struggle to produce 2 tons/acre in prolific vintages. http://www.bogedaloscerrillos.com.ar/

NQN

A brand new property in up and coming Neuquen (Patagonia). NQN boasts a spectacular modern winemaking facility and close planted, multi-clone vinyards. The facility resembles Opus One in its technical spohistication. The winery is covered by actual vineyard, with underground caves for production and elevage. The aesthetic concept adopted has searched and managed a harmonic integration with the Patagonian environment without losing sight of the winery’s technical needs. http://www.bodeganqn.com.ar/

More NEW Arrivals in at the Warehouse!

Hello! There are more new arrivals to the Wineworks Ohio Protfolio to tell you about. These next two wineries are from New Zealand!

Konrad & Company Wines, Marlborough, New Zealand
Konrad & Co is fully owned by Konrad and Sigrun Hengstler. They originally migrated from Germany to Australia and then, having decided to become involved in the wine industry, made the move from there to New Zealand to plant Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Noir grapes in Marlborough.
The office and site are located in the Waihopai Valley, which affords magnificent views of the surrounding mountain ranges. The two company-owned vineyards are located in the heart of the Marlborough wine growing region at the top of New Zealand’s South Island.

Konrad 2006 Central Ontago Pinot Noir
89 pts Stephen Tanzer 2007
“Good full red. Aromas of dark raspberry, bitter chocolate and wild spices, with more floral lift than the bottling from Marlborough. Suave and fine-grained but also serious and dense, with suggestions of raspberry liqueur and dark chocolate. A nicely concentrated young pinot noir with plenty of palate presence, not to mention good sappy life in the mouth. Finishes firmly tannic and persistent. I'd hold this for a year or two before pulling the cork..”

Konrad 2006 Marlborough Pinot Noir
Perfect with game, lamb and poultry dishes, Italian style foods and vegetarian cuisine.

Mount Fishtail Wines, Marlborough, New Zealand
Mount Fishtail is the second label owned by Konrad and Sigrun Hengstler of Konrad & Co. wines. The Mountain is part of the Richmond ranges, which is the Mountain range bordering the Marlborough region to the North and part of the landscape most visible from the Waihopai Valley home site and vineyard of the Hengstler family.

Mount Fishtail 2006 Marlborough Sauvingon Blanc
Light and fresh, a cheerful Marlborough statement, uncomplicated and easy to enjoy after work and with light foods. Good “anytime” wine.

Mount Fishtail 2006 Marlborough Pinot Noir
Mid ruby red colour. Toasty nose, showing spicy vanillin oak and ripe fruit offset by chocolate, truffles and pepper. The palate is medium bodied, soft and sweet, with ripe cranberry, plum and cherry fruit. The tannins are soft with a smooth finish.
